They don't remember the title but when they describe the story it is invariably 'The Last Question'. This has reached the point where I recently received a long-distance phone call from a desperate man who began, "Dr.
Asimov, there's a story I think you wrote, whose title I can't remember—" at which point I interrupted to tell him it was 'The Last Question' and when I described the plot it proved to be indeed the story he was after.
I left him convinced I could read minds at a distance of a thousand miles. The story deals with the development of a series of computers, Multivac, and its relationships with humanity through the courses of seven historic settings, beginning on the day in that Earth becomes a planetary civilization.
In each of the first six scenes, a different character presents the computer with the same question, how the threat to human existence posed by the heat death of the universe can be averted: "How can the net amount of entropy of the universe be massively decreased?
The story jumps forward in time into later eras of human and scientific development. In each era, someone decides to ask the ultimate "last question" regarding the reversal and decrease of entropy.
In the last scene, the god-like descendant of humanity, the unified mental process of over a trillion, trillion, trillion humans who have spread throughout the universe, watches the stars flicker out, one by one, as matter and energy end, and with them, space and time.
Humanity asks AC, Multivac's ultimate descendant that exists in hyperspace beyond the bounds of gravity or time, the entropy question one last time, before the last of humanity merges with AC and disappears.
AC is still unable to answer but continues to ponder the question even after space and time cease to exist. AC ultimately realizes that it has not yet combined all of its available data in every possible combination and so begins the arduous process of rearranging and combining every last bit of information that it has gained throughout the eons and through its fusion with humanity.
Eventually AC discovers the answer - that the reversal of entropy is, in fact, possible - but has nobody to report it to, since the universe is already dead.
It therefore decides to answer by demonstration, since that will also create someone to give the answer to. We have essentially taken the existing parts and distilled them into a specific question type for the ease and convenience of teachers designing quiz questions and for the students taking them.
Like the standard essay question type, it still requires human grading. This question type has two behaviours: deferred feedback, for use in formal Moodle Quiz tests where a tutor would mark the students' recordings; and a new self-rating behaviour, where students mark themselves.
The self-rating behaviour is used essentially whenever the behaviour is interactive or immediate. We have assumed two use-cases: 1 the student listens to a 'model' audio clip and then records their attempt to follow it.
They compare the two clips, and then rate their mimicry. Or 2 the student attempts to pronounce a written sentence verbally, and the feedback contains a model pronunciation clip, allowing the student to then compare the clips and self-rate their accuracy.
We hope that we could look at giving Essay a self-rating behaviour next, which could be used in a similar embedded fashion as an alternative to Pattern Matching sentences.
Although if you're thinking about that area already, you might find Gordon Bateson's essay auto-grade plugin of interest. Potential privacy issues You should consider the fact that under GDPR, a recording of a user's voice is personally identifiable data it is arguably also biometric data.

Word in Definition. How to pronounce pergunta? So the criticism is that there are potentially infinite concepts, each defined by the methods that measured it, such as angle of sighting, day of the solar year, angular subtense of the moon, etc.
The practical 'operational definition' is generally understood as relating to the theoretical definitions that describe reality through the use of theory.
The importance of careful operationalization can perhaps be more clearly seen in the development of General Relativity. Einstein discovered that there were two operational definitions of " mass " being used by scientists: inertial , defined by applying a force and observing the acceleration, from Newton's Second Law of Motion ; and gravitational , defined by putting the object on a scale or balance.
Previously, no one had paid any attention to the different operations used because they always produced the same results, but the key insight of Einstein was to posit the Principle of Equivalence that the two operations would always produce the same result because they were equivalent at a deep level, and work out the implications of that assumption, which is the General Theory of Relativity.
Thus, a breakthrough in science was achieved by disregarding different operational definitions of scientific measurements and realizing that they both described a single theoretical concept.
Einstein's disagreement with the operationalist approach was criticized by Bridgman as follows: "Einstein did not carry over into his general relativity theory the lessons and insights he himself has taught us in his special theory.
Operationalization is often used in the social sciences as part of the scientific method and psychometrics. Particular concerns about operationalization arise in cases that deal with complex concepts and complex stimuli e.
For example, a researcher may wish to measure the concept "anger. Rather, other measures are used by outside observers, such as facial expression, choice of vocabulary, loudness and tone of voice; after Damasio, Lesion studies.
If a researcher wants to measure the depth of "anger" in various persons, the most direct operation would be to ask them a question, such as "are you angry", or "how angry are you?
This operation is problematic, however, because it depends upon the definition of the individual. Some people might be subjected to a mild annoyance, and become slightly angry, but describe themselves as "extremely angry," whereas others might be subjected to a severe provocation, and become very angry, but describe themselves as "slightly angry.
Since one of the measures of anger is loudness, the researcher can operationalize the concept of anger by measuring how loudly the subject speaks compared to his normal tone.
However, this must assume that loudness is uniform measure. Some might respond verbally while other might respond physically.
One of the main critics of operationalism in social science argues that "the original goal was to eliminate the subjective mentalistic concepts that had dominated earlier psychological theory and to replace them with a more operationally meaningful account of human behavior.
But, as in economics, the supporters ultimately ended up "turning operationalism inside out". The above discussion links operationalization to measurement of concepts.
Many scholars have worked to operationalize concepts like job satisfaction , prejudice, anger etc. Scale and index construction are forms of operationalization.
There is not one perfect way to operationalize. For example, in the United States the concept distance driven would be operationalized as miles, whereas kilometers would be used in Europe.
Operationalization is part of the empirical research process.
